March: National Chronic Fatuigue Syndrome Awareness Month
Dr. Brenda Trudell

March is National Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Awareness Month, and it is estimated that one million Americans suffer form this devastating condition. The medical community does not have alot of options besides drugs when it comes to treating this condition.

Like many conditions that can be traced back to environmental and lifestyle factors, chronic fatigue syndrome generally has good results with alternative treatments and proper nutrition. Chronic fatigue may start with a buildup of heavy metals in the body, toxicity, poor nutrition, digestion problems, sleep issues, or thyroid problems. It is important to get a proper diagnosis to know if your symptoms are related to a different condition.

If you have chronic fatigue, the first step is to detox. In a previous article I discussed ways to detox and how it can help the body. After cleansing with a detox program, it is important to support your body with proper nutrition. There are many foods that can help support you.

What foods are best to optimize daily nutrition for CFS patient?

  • Flaxseeds, shrimp, and fatty fishes for Omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Salmon for Omega-3 fatty acids and Vitamin B-12.
  • Clams, liver, trout, and organic lean top sirloin beef for Vitamin B-12.
  • Broccoli, asparagus, peas, and romaine lettuce for folic acid.
  • Walnuts for folic acid and Omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Fortified breakfast cereals are excellent sources of many vitamins and nutrients, including folic acid, magnesium, and Vitamin B-12.
  • Halibut and fermented soy products for Omega-3 fatty acids and magnesium.
  • Spinach for folic acid, potassium, and magnesium.
  • Raw almonds, cashews, oatmeal, peanuts, and baked potatoes with the skin for magnesium.
  • Bananas and oranges are for potassium and folic acid.
  • Organic meat, poultry, fish, tomatoes, and cantaloupe for potassium.

Chiropractic adjustments can also help your body during this time. By allowing your nervous system to function properly, you are ensuring that every muscle and organ communicates effectively and gets enough blood flow to produce energy. By helping boost your immune system and establish normal digestion, your body is able to more effectively clear out toxins and germs, and you can use your energy for healing instead of chronically fighting something.

If you feel that you are one of the many Americans suffering from this condition, or would like to improve energy levels in general, call our office for a consultation to see if chiropractic and nutrition can help you.
Q & A: Acupuncture for Fatigue; Reiki for Detox; Raindrop Technique For Better Health

Can Acupuncture Help Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?
Ronghua Jiang, LAc

Yes! Acupuncture and Chinese medicine can help boost energy level and help chronic fatigue syndrome.

According to Chinese medical theory, fatigue is usually due to the Qi deficiency, especially spleen Qi deficiency. Qi is the natural vital energy which circulates throughout your body. People usually feel tired and have lower energy and decreased motivation due to fatigue. Sometimes fatigue is associated with digestive disorders such as irregular bowel movements,
loose or soft stools and/or constipation. Some patients may have a hard time falling asleep or easily wake up during night.

Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine have positive results for general fatigue symptoms. We use Acupuncture to strengthen spleen system (digestive system) to improve digestion so that people can absorb more nutrition from
the food they eat. Acupuncture can also calm down the patient's mind or spirit in order to help the patient to sleep better. Some patients may need Acupuncture combined with Chinese herbal medicine such as "Bu zhong yi qi wan","shen qi
da bu wan", or "shen lin bai shu wan" etc. All of these will help the patient boost qi and their energy level.

Did you know?! Reiki for Detoxing!
Joan Pape, RMT

Reiki is a complementary therapy which originated in Japan. It works on the basis that all living things are made of energy but sometimes the flow of energy through the body can get blocked or depleted.  Everyone passes energy through their hands. A Reiki practitioner is trained to "tune into" the energy around them similar to the way a radio receiver tunes into a specific frequency.  The Reiki practitioner brings the healing frequencies through their hands into the recipient, which increases the recipient's own energy supply thereby helping the body achieve it's natural state of well being.

Have you ever felt "off" after spending time with someone who is emotionally distraught, or sick or angry?  Sometimes we pick up energies from other people and those energies can get stuck in our energy field.  Reiki is a very simple way to rid ourselves of undesireable energies.

We are alive because life energy, or Ki, is flowing around and through us.  During a Reiki session, healing energies are brought through the practitioner's hands into the clients' body.  These higher energy frequencies will flow to energetic blocks.  By flowing through affected parts of the energy field and in the body, Reiki charges blocks with positive energy and raises the vibratory level in and around the physical body.  This causes negative or blocked energies to break apart and fall away.  In so doing, Reiki clears, straightens and heals the energy pathways, allowing healthy Ki to flow in a natural way.

Although this is a rather abbreviated explanation of how Reiki can help to detoxify the body and the energy field, I hope it has given you a bit of insight on how Reiki works.

The "One-Minute" Detox

Rub a stainless steel spoon over the bottom of your feet.  The metal draws excess energies down and off the foot.  "Spooning" has a subtle centering effect on your nervous system, and it is also grounding.

Please feel free to contact Joan or Rita with any additional questions about reiki.

What is Raindrop Technique and how can it help me?

Tracy VanEpps Connell, RMT

Raindrop Massage Technique - Is an application of therapeutic-grade essential oils along the spine and back followed by light massage.  The oils work to attack any viruses along the spine and are a tool for assisting the body in healing by utilizing the anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties inherent to the oils. This modality is great for detoxifying the body as well as pain and inflammation reduction.

Go Green When You Clean!

Go Green When You Clean!
 Amy Mertz, MT

There's nothing like a good spring cleaning to refresh your home after a long winter and many months of your house being devoid of fresh air. But before heading out to buy supplies, check your cupboards for some of these everyday items that are mostly safe, natural, effective and, best of all, cheap.

Baking soda: Chances are you keep baking soda around the house. It's great for all-purpose cleaning because it disinfects, deodorizes and removes stains.

Distilled white vinegar: Vinegar is a grease-cutter, a stain remover, a natural disinfectant and works to soften water, too.

Lemon juice: Try juicing a lemon to remove grease, disinfect, remove stains and to replace bleach.

Salt: Salt can replace cleanser because it works as an abrasive. Try it on stubborn sink stains.

Borax: Found in the laundry detergent aisle, this mineral is a bleach alternative. It strengthens the effectiveness of soap, deodorizes, disinfects, and kills mold and bacteria. Note that although Borax is natural, it is still toxic to pets and children, and it is rough on skin. Wear gloves when handling the substance.

Essential oils: Lavender, lemon, rosemary and tea tree oils, available in Mount Horeb at Trillium Natural Foods or at Isaac's Soaps, are great for adding a bit of fragrance to your homemade cleaning solutions. They also have disinfectant properties.

Hydrogen peroxide: It's not just for scrapes and cuts. Use it to disinfect countertops or to clean bathrooms. You can add an equal part of water and a few drops of your favorite essential oil for a pleasing scent. Keep this one out of children's reach.

Here are a few recipes for cleaning solutions.

All-purpose cleaner #1: Mix 1 part vinegar and 4 parts water to fill a spray bottle. Add a few drops of essential oil, or a tablespoon of lemon juice. Use to clean countertops, bathrooms and sealed floors or other sealed surfaces.

All-purpose cleaner #2: Mix 1/8 cup of baking soda in a quart of warm water. Add a few drops of lemon or lavender oil if desired.

Glass cleaner: Vinegar -- either straight or mixed with an equal amount of water -- is a good substitute for standard glass cleaner. Rubbing alcohol works, too.

Wood cleaner: A teaspoon of lemon juice, a tablespoon of olive oil and about a cup of warm water will work well here.

Abrasive cleanser: Use a couple tablespoons of baking soda topped with an equal amount of dish soap. This mixture works well on the inside of an oven. Wipe clean with a wet rag dipped in some vinegar to prevent streaks on metal or stainless steel. Salt with a few drops of water also will treat stubborn oven stains.

To get rid of odors, try putting unscented kitty litter or charcoal in a bowl to absorb the odors, or simply light a match and blow it out.

In the laundry room, baking soda is a great boost to detergent because it deep-cleans clothes and removes stains. Cornstarch absorbs oil and grease, so it's a good thing to try before resorting to harsh stain removers. Borax will improve detergent's cleaning power and can be used in place of bleach.
