Trigger
Point Therapy In addition
to adjusting the bones of the spine, it is important to also address the muscles
of the back. Many things can irritate muscle fibers (posture at work, previous
injuries, needing to be adjusted, diet) and sometimes an adjustment alone wont
fix the muscular problem. Trigger point therapy's primary focus is the elimination
of myofascial pain syndrome caused by hyper irritable areas in muscles. Trigger
point therapy can be performed in several ways, the least invasive is through
the application of direct pressure to the trigger point within the effected muscle.
Application of a vapocoolant spray in conjunction with stretching of the affected
muscle, as well as therapeutic ultrasound may also be used. Treating trigger points
involves direct pressure to and stretching of the affected musculature. The amount
of force used is dependent on patient tolerance. The technique affects the body
by eliminating the accumulation of waste in the muscle. Additionally, trigger
point therapy allows for restoration of normal muscle tone and flexibility. Trigger
points are generally located through physical examination. Even though these areas
are very tender, many patients do not realize they have them until the doctor
finds them through palpation. It is not uncommon for trigger point therapy to
be slightly painful during the treatment and shortly after. Think of it as lactic
acid buildup that accumulates in your muscles after you run or lift weights for
the first time in awhile. This is a toxin in your muscles and causes discomfort.
The same thing happens with TPT. When the toxins are released there can be some
discomfort, but most patients notice a quick improvement, increased range of motion,
and less tightness in those areas that were treated. Back
